A play that raises questions about women’s rights!

Synopsis: ‘Salimata and Fatoumata decide to set up an association for gender equality in Senegal. To do so, they have to convince the people around them of the need for their venture and ask themselves questions about the place of women in Senegal and the rest of the world. By questioning our stereotypes of women and men, the show tackles with humour and irony the possibilities of a fight for a fairer world.

This new play deals with the role and place of women in Senegalese society, but also with the image of African women conveyed around the world, and raises essential questions about the concept of sorority, feminist struggles and women’s rights in the light of globalisation, new technologies and Islam. By exploring our stereotypes of men and women, the author brings us face to face with our own limitations and shifts the feminist struggle towards a broader idea of justice for all. The research was based on sociological studies and interviews, as well as studies of African and international feminist movements and the literature of black women authors such as Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Leonora Miano and Bell Hooks. The work on stage with the actors began in the director’s usual way, working in silence, using images and movement before integrating the text to create a show that reflects Senegalese society and its current questions about the place of women.
