From October 1st to October 31st, 2024, Nadia Ferroukhi, a documentary photographer and visual storyteller based in Paris, will embark on an engaging photographic project in The Gambia. Her aim is to explore the emancipation of Gambian women through her lens, with the goal of creating an exhibition at the end of her residency.
Born to a Czech mother and Algerian father, the artist experienced a nomadic childhood that shaped her unique perspective on the world. Her career has taken her across the globe, capturing human stories which she shares through both French and international press outlets, as well as in international festivals and museums.
Multilingual and curious, she explores her lifelong aspirations through her “third eye” and empathy. Her photographs tell stories of individuals whose uniqueness enriches the diversity of our planet, with a particular emphasis on the role of women.
During this residency, Nadia Ferroukhi will also conduct three interactive “public interventions”. These sessions of 2 to 3 hours each, will take various forms such as meetings with young Gambian photographers, engagements with schoolchildren, or gatherings with groups of women to present her photographic work.
Nadia is also socially committed through her associations: in 2008, she founded the Douniatou Association to support the village of Tumaï in Kenya, a project recently highlighted in her latest book “Les Matriarches”. In 2022, she established Anno’s Arts to promote artistic and academic education for children in Nairobi’s slums and foster exchanges with France.
A graduate in International Relations from Virginia, USA, Nadia Ferroukhi embodies the quote by Paul Klee that guides her artistic approach: “Seeing with one eye, feeling with the other”.
This project is funded by the French Embassy in Senegal and The Gambia and implemented by the Alliance as part of the “We together for women’s empowerment” project: promoting women’s expression through the arts, culture, debate and entrepreneurship.
