Given that memorialisation is often neglected in the consolidation of transitional justice processes, and in line with the principle of dealing with the past, ANEKED launched a permanent memorialisation project entitled “The Duty to Remember” housed at Memory House in Kanifing, in The Gambia.

Memory House was launched in October 2021 to serve as a memorial centre designed to legitimize the experiences of victims of human rights violations during the last regime. It provides a space for mourning and reflection, thus contributing to long-term healing and a lasting culture of respect for human rights and empathy through educational programs that will allow for the younger generation to understand fundamental human rights and respect for one another among other activities.

Traveling Exhibition is a mobile version of Memory House that is organized in various towns and villages nationwide and outside the country to reach people who are unable to travel long distances to visit Memory House.

On display at the traveling exhibition are portraits of victims and their relatives taken by Gambian photographer Muhammed Bittaye (Bitz) and British photographers Jason Florio and Helen Jones-Florio.

With this project, ANEKED hopes to entrench an inclusive and sustainable culture of respect for human rights and justice in the Gambia through dialogue, debates, and discussions, thereby building “armies” of human rights protectors and defenders around the country.
