Amnesty International KM, in partnership with Alliance Française de Banjul, is organising a community dialogue on female genital mutilation and cutting with a wide range of partners and stakeholders.

Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a deeply rooted cultural practice that has serious physical, emotional and psychological consequences for girls and women. Despite global efforts to eradicate it, FGM persists in many communities around the world, including The Gambia. In 2015, The Gambia banned FGM, marking its commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of its citizens, particularly women and girls. However, there have been recent discussions about repealing the ban on FGM in The Gambia, citing cultural, religious and social reasons. Such a repeal would undermine years of progress in protecting the rights of women and girls and perpetuate harm and inequality.

The main aim of this event is to raise awareness of the issue: to give the public a better understanding of the effects of female genital mutilation on physical, mental and emotional health.
