Portraits of Gambian Women in Comics

From September 22nd to October 16th, 2025, the Alliance Française de Banjul welcomes artist Annick Kamgang (aka Kam) for a creative residency focused on comics, alongside Cécile Coudrière.

An Artist Committed to African Struggles

Annick Kamgang, known for her work at the intersection of art and activism, draws from her personal and family history a deep political consciousness. Her press illustrations and graphic novels give shape to often underreported African struggles.

Her best-known work, Lucha, published in 2018, demonstrates her artistic and political commitment. Her upcoming book Les enfants du pays (Children of the Country), exploring Cameroon’s war of independence, is eagerly anticipated for late 2024.

A Project Dedicated to Gambian Women

In Gambia, Annick Kamgang meets women who are agents of change: activists, entrepreneurs, educators, and artists. From these encounters, she will build a series of graphic narratives, transforming these testimonies into accessible, powerful, and sensitive comics.

This approach aligns with the continuity of her work, consistently focused on highlighting African narratives, particularly those of engaged women.

Exhibition and Sharing

The fruits of this work will be presented in an exhibition at the Alliance Française de Banjul, accompanied by moments of exchange with the public. The objective: to create a space for dialogue around women’s struggles in Africa and to give visibility to often invisible stories.

This artistic residency embodies a commitment to the transmission, memory, and valorization of women’s roles in contemporary Gambian society.
