The Alliance Française de Banjul is pleased to welcome Eugénie Baccot, an independent French photographer known for her documentary and narrative approach, from February 6 to 28, 2025. Her work, which straddles the line between photojournalism and artistic photography, has been featured in prestigious media outlets such as Libération, the Washington Post, and Days Japan.
This residency follows a successful initial stay in 2023, during which she conducted remarkable documentary work on the Christian Akus and Krios communities of Banjul. During this initial visit, in addition to her personal photographic project, she shared her expertise with five young Gambian photographers through a series of workshops that combined photographic theory, field practice, and retouching techniques.
A recipient of several notable awards, including the Health Journalism Grant from the European Journalism Centre (2018), the creation grant from the Centre National des Arts Plastiques (2021), and the Canon Discovery Award from the International Women in Photo Association (2022), Eugénie Baccot will continue her dual approach during this new residency: developing a personal photographic project in Gambia while sharing her knowledge with local photographers through workshops.
This month-long residency reflects the Alliance Française de Banjul’s ongoing commitment to promoting cultural exchange and developing local artistic skills, while allowing a talented artist to deepen her photographic exploration of the city and its inhabitants.
Behind The Burning Sun is a photography exhibition by @eugenie.baccot, held on February 27th.
Behind The Burning Sun is a visual narrative created during Eugénie Baccot’s two residencies in The Gambia. To shape her vision, the photographer drew inspiration from Alex Haley’s novel Roots: The Saga of an American Family. This significant literary work served as the foundation for a photographic exploration of memory in Gambia.
