Entre Business et Héritage

A photographic exhibition by Ina Makosi
From October 29 to November 29, 2024, at Alliance Française

In the bustling streets of the Gambia, where the sun dances on faces and colorful stalls, Ina Makosi has cast her benevolent gaze. For a month, this talented Senegalese photographer traversed the Gambia, capturing the very essence of its everyday heroines.

“Entre business et héritage” immerses us in a world where tradition and modernity intertwine, where each snapshot tells a story of courage and determination. From peanut sellers to business leaders, Ina Makosi reveals the quiet strength that drives these Gambian women.

Her lens, like a delicate brush, sketches the contours of an emancipation in progress. It captures the pride in the gaze of a merchant, the concentration of a craftswoman perpetuating an ancestral skill, or the determination of a young entrepreneur daring to defy conventions.

This exhibition is the culmination of an artistic residency at the Alliance Française in Banjul, the result of a collaboration between the French Embassy in Senegal and the Gambia and the Alliance Française. It is part of the project “We together for women’s empowerment,” aimed at promoting the expression of women through arts, culture, debate, and entrepreneurship.

Come discover these striking portraits, visual testimonies of a living heritage and a promising future. Let yourself be carried away by the visual poetry of Ina Makosi, where each image is an ode to the resilience and ingenuity of Gambian women.

“Entre business et héritage”: an invitation to see beyond appearances, to celebrate these ordinary heroines who, day after day, weave the fabric of a society in transition.
